A retail chain store retained Pinnacle Engineering to perform
a safety audit of distribution material handling equipment in
10 locations. The client prioritizes a workplace free of
recognizable hazards, and is committed to operations at
the highest safety levels. The owners believe this commitment
to safety facilitates the most cost-efficient, value-added service
to both customers and employees.
Distribution centers ship product to all northeast retail locations.
Products move through the distribution centers via fork trucks,
pallet jacks, conveyors, cranes and other material handling
equipment. The maintenance team is staffed with skilled
tradesman, who have historically maintained an exceptional
safety record. The mission of the safety audit was to review
existing material handling equipment in the distribution centers
for safety issues relative to mechanics and operators, and to
identify ways to further improve safety, and
safety-consciousness.
Four broad categories were analyzed. These categories
encompass both stored product and personnel, and take into
account how they can affect each other relative to safety:
|
Objects that fall (product and personnel) |
|
Objects that crash / collide (product and personnel) |
|
Objects that get caught (product and personnel) |
|
Occurrences of risk related to the 3 above |
|
|
The Safety Audit was segmented into specific material handling
functions, and safety issues relative to each location observed.
A safety audit checklist identified potential concerns within each
facility, and for each material handling function. Photographs
correlated to specific issues covered by the Safety Audit.
Areas of primary interest for the safety audit included these
8 areas; there were numerous sub-categories for each:
|
Rack and bin storage |
|
Aisles |
|
Manual picking zones |
|
Docks
|
|
